UNIGRID Battery
UNIGRID offers sodium all solid-state batteries to address the grid energy storage problem. While today’s storage is dominated by lithium ion and other batteries, the marketplace has identified safety, cost and sustainability as the main determinants for grid storage success. Lithium and other rare elements used (such as cobalt and nickel) in lithium ion batteries face significant price and supply chain fluctuations due to their limited availabilities around the world. Alternatives to lithium ion batteries are urgently needed. Here, UNIGRID has the competitive edge by focusing on sodium and solid-state chemistries that do not use any lithium, nickel, cobalt or rare elements. Our solid-state batteries exhibit high safety factors by being completely non-flammable while matching today’s lithium ion battery’s performance. It’s non-flammable chemistries also enable energy storage applications over a much wider operating temperature range, allowing us to serve markets across all climatic conditions. Our closed-loop battery recycling technology allows end-of-life batteries to recycled without use of toxic chemicals or energetic processes, offering minimal impact to the environment.
Battery Storage Systems: Weight vs Space efficiencies. Relative costs and performance lifetimes.
For performance, unlike most other types of batteries that focuses on high gravimetric energy (Wh/kg), we focus on sodium materials in place of lithium, providing high volumetric energy (Wh/L) instead. High volumetric energy density (where it takes up less space) is vital for stationary storage as its weight considerations are irrelevant. Additionally, our solid-state solution provides flexibility in form factor and size (kWh to MWh), allowing deployment in a variety of applications such as homes, buildings, communities and urban grids. To address unpredictable loads, UNIGRID’s storage systems can retain their state of charge for extended periods without losing energy, making it suitable for long term use and storage. Within the grid scale energy storage space, UNIGRID has a clear edge over the competition.
UNIGRID’s key technologies involve: 1) Interfacial stabilization between solid electrolyte and high voltage electrodes / dense metallic anodes, allowing for stable cycling required in long term grid storage. 2) Thin and flexible solid electrolyte processability, enabling scalable manufacturing of high- volumetric-energy-density sodium all solid-state batteries, that matches the performance of today’s lithium ion batteries while preserving the benefits safety and long life. 3) Complete closed loop battery recyclability without using toxic chemicals or energetic processes, ensuring that no waste is generated at its end-of-life while recovering materials to make fresh batteries. UNIGRID combines the benefits of sodium and solid-state design to deliver a sustainable solution for the grid, offering customers zero safety incidents and uninterrupted long-term power supply at lower costs.
