Silicon anodes have emerged as a promising route to increase lithium-ion battery anodic capacities and energy densities for the last decade, due to its more than 11 times higher theoretical discharge capacity over presently used graphite. However, today, even in state of art battery products silicon content delivers only a minor increment in their rated capacities. This is because the net silicon content in battery anodes remain limited to single-digit percentages by weight due to its inherent instabilities arising from swelling and subsequently poor capacity retention. While techniques such as core-shell structures or the use of silicon nanowires have enabled higher silicon content at small production volumes and thereby anodic capacity recently, the feasibility of their unit cost and their production scalability remains uncertain (due to the use of energy-intensive processes like chemical vapour deposition(CVD)).
Volt14 Solutions is a startup that taps into this unrealised potential of silicon anodes and enables ultra-high capacity battery products by inventing anodes that contain up to 60% silicon by weight. By making silicon our primary active material, we increase volumetric and gravimetric energy densities by up to 70% at a cell level. Furthermore, our proprietary fabrication techniques rely on post-processing commercially mass-produced silicon, thereby circumventing the need for any in-house energy-intensive processes or highly specialised production processes.
Through a massive leap in energy density and economically feasible production scale-up, Volt14 Solutions will enable up to a 30% reduction in $/kWh reduction in energy storage costs on a battery pack level.
Our M1 range of anode composite powders is designed to be dispersible into a slurry using pre-installed industrial mixers, making them a turnkey solution for most existing battery cell production lines without any modifications. The M1 powders have been extensively validated against off-the-shelf cathode materials as well as electrolytes in a variety of cell configurations. We are closely working with several key players across the automotive, 3C and ESS space for their upcoming products, and have been validated to conform to industry performance standards for various applications.
The latter half of the decade is an inflexion point for the battery industry, with production volumes expected to rise 8 fold over the coming decade and increases in battery performance surpassing existing learning curves. Volt14 Solutions delivers a plug and play material solution to battery cell manufacturers to radically enhance their cell products and deep competitive advantages over several cycles to come.
Volt14 Solutions is founded by former researchers in energy storage from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and are alumni of the deep-tech accelerator Entrepreneur First.
